On August 15, China announced to the world that the main venue of the G20 summit will be in Hangzhou International Expo Center. The huge building known as the “Iron Man” sits in the new center of Hangzhou-Qianjiang Century City. As the summit approaches, the international style of Qianjiang Century City attracts more and more attention.
New start of International Exhibitions
The construction of the Hangzhou International Expo Center and the Olympic Sports Center is undoubtedly remarkable in Hangzhou’s internationalization process. This new central area will be the “Window of Hangzhou” with its rising international conference and exhibition industry.
The designers of Hangzhou International Expo Center said that its building area is up to 850,000 square meters, the largest in China and the second largest in the world. Its total steel structure weighs 140,000 tons, more than the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing. The basement of 310,000 square meters is equal to the area of 43 standard football fields. The more than 10,000 square meters of pole-free exhibition hall can host all kinds of large-scaled exhibitions.
The Hangzhou International Expo Center will meet the requirements of high-standard international conferences. The successful preparation for the G20 Summit will demonstrate the city’s soft strength for hosting major international conferences.
The North Star Group, responsible for the operation of the Hangzhou International Expo Center, said that the International Expo Center will be officially open to the public in October. Currently the Center has signed 13 exhibition contracts. There are another 20 items under negotiation. Exhibitions have been scheduled to 2019. Following the G20 Summit, some Expos will be launched in succession, Chinese Silk Expo, China (Hangzhou) International E-business Expo 2016, and Geely Autos Assembly, to name a few.
As a carrier of Hangzhou’s strategy of developing Expo economy, Hangzhou Qianjiang Century City has become the flagship of the conference and exhibition sector. The new buildings, new economy, and new momentum have composed the international and innovative dynamism of this rapidly growing young city.
CBD of Innovation
This place has incubated some well-known international groups.
Wanxiang Group goes international from its birthplace Qianjiang Century City area. In every two American made cars, one contains parts produced by Wanxiang. The company has also acquired the US Fisker Automotive, which was once Tesla’s biggest rival.
Transfar Group is another company that was born here. In the past 30 years, the company has grown from a bicycle peddling detergent vendor into China’s industrial upstart. It has created a new model of Chinese highway logistics, gaining a lot of thumb-ups from the central government leaders.
According to Zhejiang Provincial Government’s strategic plan, a provincial financial harbor will be constructed along Qiantang River. It will be the financial cluster in Hangzhou and in Zhejiang, a financial center similar to the Wall Street in New York City.
The deputy director of Qianjiang Century City Administrative Committee, Zhang Wenbo said, “Qiangtang Financial Bund will be the core area of the financial harbor.”
In addition to sports, MICE tourism and finance, the new center of Hangzhou will be devoted to developing regional headquarters, E-commerce and new format commerce that help to diversify Qianjiang Century City in the economic transition. Its direct effect is that its city CBD function and status will be quickly reinforced.
Window of Hangzhou
In five years, at the bank of Qijia River where Hangzhou International Expo Center is located, a 310-metered tall Gate of Hangzhou will be built. The two towers are designed by SOM. It will be the First Tower of Hangzhou. When completed, it will constitute a new landmark cluster at the new city center along with the International Expo Center, the Olympic Sports Center, the Civic Center and the International Conference Centre north of the river.
